I Once Was A Mary Kay Consultant
I Once Was A Mary Kay Consultant
Everyone has a story to tell. I have MANY.
Today I remembered that: I Once Was A #1 Mary Kay Sales Consultant!
Although we often hear horror stories about Mary Kay Consultants, I was loved by most of the women I came into contact with while selling Mary Kay. I was number one for several reasons:
- 1. I was pushy.
- 2. I loved make-up
- 3. I loved helping people feel beautiful.
- 4. I ASSISTED not instructed people on what to do.
Finding a decent Mary Kay Representative can be daunting nowadays because the rep is either a newbie or overzealous. In some cases, they just do not have the people skills for this kind of work. To me, Mary Kay felt like SOCIAL job. It was just a overt publicity at every opportunity. I was an IN YOUR FACE kind of representative. I used to go down to 5th Avenue Mall in Anchorage and handout samples with my card attached. In fact, I created such a ruckus with my advertising that the city changed it ordinances to stop people from blatantly advertising like I did back then. (lol).
I was so good at what I did, that I used to hold makeup parties at the Ramada Inn up in Anchorage. I used to get 100-200 women attending!!! I would serve hors d'oeuvres and DJ! Yes, I was actually also a DJ too!!! I had my hustle on TIGHT!!! I had a stylist, I had a Photographer doing glamour shots, and I had a team of 10-25 women working the floor. It was MAGIC! I was Ms. Go Give back in 1993. My daughter was a baby and her father was a deadbeat, so I had to make enough money to work my way off of welfare. I was on it less than a year!! Mary Kay made me INDEPENDENT!!! It changed my mindset and my life! I was determined to be a success and I was!
I remember trudging through the snow with those darn pink cases. I did not even HAVE A CAR!!! And I lived in Alaska!!!! Even now, I can barely believe what can be achieved on willpower and sheer determination alone! I believe what I did back then, was set up a positive role model for my daughter who watched her mom achieve success from home. She watched me qualify for the Grand Am Red Car as a Team Leader (I took a monthly check instead) and my Director get a Pink Cadillac.
Those were the days. However, since Mary Kay consists 100% of INDEPENDENT consultants, a person can never tell if they are getting a good one or not. This is why Mary Kay business used to be 100% based on word of mouth advertising through hosting parties. I was lucky. I managed to host almost ALL the Black and Hispanic word of mouth business in Anchorage! I made most of my customers from off the military bases. Once one of the officers wives heard about me, I was booked solid with 3-6 parties A WEEK for more than a year!!! At my highest, I earned over $2000 a week in Mary Kay!!! So don't knock the hustle. I am not sure if they are good any more though. I stopped back in 1996. So they just may not be the same now that the actual creator, Mary Kay has passed away.
I just wanted to share my story... and warn all, that NOT ALL Mary Kay Consultants are created equal. Some have NO CLUE what they are doing. You could come across a new recruit, or someone who operates primarily an Internet Business. So they just do not have the make-up skills that I once had mastered. It takes years of constant perfecting to become a GREAT Mary Kay Consultant. Not everyone possesses the inner fortitude to be a success in this line of work. In my case, Mary Kay changed my life. I will forever be grateful to Mary Kay. It is now more than 20 years later, and as I look back, I realize it was Mary Kay that molded me into the powerhouse Sales Rep I used to be. I thank Mary Kay and her dream for women.
Although I no longer use Mary Kay, I point to their teachings on how to care for my skin as one of the main reasons I look this good in my 50's. I use Proactiv Plus for skincare now, but am considering something new for aging skin, like Cindy Crawford's line. I have been using Proactiv for about 20 years, and I stick with it because I keep getting compliments.
